Update from Aarhus 2018 Test Event

Today is day four in Aarhus for the Hempel 2018 Sailing World Championship Test Event. So far so good for weather conditions that brought good wind from different angles, a wavy and rougher day and lighter breezes yesterday. The results are far from predictions, like it often happens in sport, but we would like to keep track of our Star Sailors.

FINN

Zsombor Berecz (HUN), crew at SSL Finals 2016 for Vasilij Žbogar (SLO), is looking good on second position only four points away from the first one. He is having a great series, so far he is discarding a 13th. Just out the top10 acceding sunday’s Medal Race, we find Max Salminen (SWE) who was helming a boat in the first SSL Lake Grand Slam in Grandson on lac du Neuchatel in Switzerland. The door to the Medal Race isn’t locked yet, Max has the same score as the tenth in ranking and can still make his way to Sunday. This will prove more difficult to Jorge Zarif (BRA) and Facundo Olezza (ARG), these two young sailors have both been the rookies at the SSL Finals, Jorge is now 15th and Facu 17th.

LASER

Tom Burton (AUS) won Gold at Rio Olympics but couldn’t manage to get a good feeling on a Star boat in just one week at the SSL Finals. We’re sure he just needed a couple more days to manage it brilliantly, but he is now back on the lase and performing at top level: he is second only one point behind the first one. Tonci Stipanovic (CRO) is fourth after winning a race yesterday, he is the Silver medalist from Rio, and a few points behind him on the fifth position is Pavlos Kontides (CYP) SSL Finalist in 2015. Sam Meech (NZL) is seventh so on Sunday we will probably have a Medal Race full of SSL Finalist: Sam was in Nassau last December, after his bronze medal in Rio, helming with crew Craig Monk.

49er

Last but not least of the SSL Finalist racing this week in Aarhus, Sime Fantela (CRO). The golden boy from the 470 is taking on the 49er for Tokyo 2020 with his brother Mihovil: after leading in the first few days he is now seventh so he should be racing at the 49er Medal Race tomorrow. Another Star Sailor that switched to 49er is Robert Scheidt (BRA), moving from the Laser class to the acrobatic skiff, but he is not racing in Aarhus this week.
