The split into Gold brought tears of Sorrow and Joy

Today, being Women’s Day, we are focusing on the highlights of the 49er FX sailors at Day 3 of the 49er and 49er FX World Champs!

Yesterday was a tough day on the race course and an emotional one in the boatpark. The top two FX teams from the USA, have not both made it into the Gold Fleet, Roble and Shea qualified into Gold Fleet while Tobias and Henken finished just outside in 29th place. However, it is not over for Tobias and Henken; they still have a chance to redeem themselves and be selected for the Paris Olympics. Their last chance is to outperform their teammates at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia regatta.

Since last year’s Worlds in The Hague the tables have turned dramatically between two Australian teams. Last summer Olivia Price and Evie Haseldine won bronze while Laura Harding and Annie Wilmot finished 20th. Today saw the tables turn for the Aussies, now in fourth place is Harding and Wilmot and Price and Haseldine regretfully did not even make Gold Fleet, despite winning the third race of today’s session.

For Danish sisters Johanne and Andrea Schmidt it’s a day of celebration as they are the only Danes to get through to the Gold Fleet and thus their spot at the Games is secured.

Today the Gold Fleet racing begins and it will be the first opportunity for the top two teams to race against each other on the same race course. Racing continues with the fleets split into gold and silver for both classes. There are live broadcasts of each gold fleet race, so be sure to tune in!

Happy Women's Day!
