Bacardi Cup 2017 and Star Sailors League

The SSL Calendar for 2017 is definitely taking shape and the Star Sailors League is honored to confirm that the Bacardi Cup 2017, in Miami from March 6th to 11th, will be like a SSL Grand Slam, with 3,000 SSL Ranking points given to the winners and full live TV coverage, streamed free on internet, of the event in the grand SSL Finals style, improved for the first time by onboard cameras.

Bacardi Cup is one of the most attended, followed and historic regattas for Star boats. The first event was organized in 1927 in La Havana, Cuba, and stayed there until 1962 when the Bacardi family moved the business, and the sailing cup, in Miami. A few interruptions along the way, due to World War I, World War II and the Cuba revolution, didn’t affect the appealing of this regatta.

The SSL Sea Grand Slam takes inspiration from traditional regattas such as the Bacardi Cup celebrating the champions that are the inshore regattas legends: Paul Elvstrom (DEN), Lowell North (USA), Dennis Conner (USA), John Bertrand (AUS), Jochen Shümann (GER) and more.

The Bacardi Cup format sees long routes and races, not more than 2 per day, lasting up to two hours. The ideal winner for this regatta is a great strategist, able to run his race while controlling the other competitors, anticipating the water’s evolution, taking advantage from them. It’s endurance sailing at its finest, the best will maintain physical and mental potential for up to 8 hours a day and will race with winds ranging from 10 to 18 knots.

The Bacardi Cup is the example to take inspiration from when SSL will be ready to hold its first SSL Sea Grand Slam, and we are most delighted to take part in the promotion of Bacardi Cup 2017.
