Fine Art Sails in Trieste and Venice to help the Andrew Simpson Foundation

For the second year in a row Fine Art Sails was among the more than 2,000 boats in the Gulf of Trieste for the 50th edition of the Barcolana. The beautiful 13 mainsails painted by well known contemporary artists sailed right in front of the renowned Piazza Unità d’Italia, where for the Barcolana thousands of people gathered. This is an International project that combines sailing, art, and charity and the 100 old keel boat, the Star. After last year’s trial edition, the Star is officially back in Trieste to raise money for the Andrew Simpson Foundation, a charity born in the memory of late British Star Olympic champion.

The Star Class Adriatic fleet reminded everybody of the historical role of this boat in the world of sailing recalling the names of legendary skippers, and the 13 teams sailed with sails painted by contemporary young artists on three windward-leeward races. The races can were watched and followed from ashore, as they were quite close to the city.

This year though, Fine Arte Sails didn’t stop in Trieste and Barcolana, but attended also another very traditional and popular Italian regatta, Veleziana, in Venice. This event cannot reach the numbers of Barcolana, as the race doesn’t take place in a big Gulf but in front of the spectacular Piazza San Marco, in the Canal Grande. The pictures are just astounding.

Fine Art Sails’ goals is to promote the sport of sailing - and particularly sailing the Star - through art and beauty and honor the memory of Andrew Simpson, the goal of the Andrew Simpson Foundation is to keep Bart’s name alive while helping kids to get close to sailing by helping them with logistic and financial support.
